12:50a RARGLE FARGLE
So, I've been using SmartFTP for years now. Well now, all of a sudden, they've decided to no longer offer free service. Anybody know of a good free FTP program? Or else can anybody hook me up with a crack version of a pay one?

1:14p On the fence: scanning sketchs vs going full digital
For a while I was sketching on paper and scanned the sketch for colors & inks. Then I got my hands on a Wacom tablet and realized I could do more than ink over my paper sketches, I could sketch directly onto my laptop.
I've got a FT job and do my are and webcomic on the side, so I like to keep it very mobile so I can work on my stuff where ever I am.
This meant carrying a bag with my sketch book, various supplies and source materials and a portable tabletop easel, AND my laptop, scanner and tablet. Kinda heavy:)
Since I've realized I can sketch directly to the laptop, I technically don't need to use the sketchbook like I have been. And I can drop about two-thirds of the weight. I like the portability and ease of not having to use the sketch book, and I know my finished work is only "traced" over the pencilled originals and not the originals themselves, but I'm not 100% comfortable yet with there being no pencil originals.
So I'm on the fence.
I'm curious what you folks do.
Whatever your skill level, do you prefer pencil originals or digital originals when it comes to your art?

11:09a Sails of Blood: Vampire Pirate, High Seas Adventure

The Caribbean, the 1690s. Jacob van Ritter is a vampire pirate alchemist. His girlfriend, Marielle, is also a pirate, the captain of the Damballah. She's a zombie, by the way. The hot chicks with the swords and guns? A kill team. Combined wet work squads from the Catholic Inquisition and the English Witchfinders. van Ritter's looking for the Emerald Tablet of Hermes Trismestigus, an alchemical treasure of great power. Marielle's looking to capture ships, take treasure, and have fun. The nuns want van Ritter staked, beheaded, and set on fire. In any order. Oh, and van Ritter's crew? Ritually scarified Mayans high on hallucinogenic toad.

Sails of Blood is a serialized graphic novel. A new page is posted every Monday. Page 3 just went live.

6:17p advice for a newbie
Hi, everybody! (hi, super lib!)
I'm feeling pretty shy about posting here, because I don't really consider myself a comic artist (yet?). Also, some of you guys are artists I've been reading for a while now, and I'm suffering from a bit of hero worship, and a lot of stage fright. So if I trip, fall down, and wet my pants on stage, lets just pretend that was all part of the act, okay?
I have been reading webcomics since 1997, and whenever I can find it, I've devoured articles about good comic writing, storytelling, etc. I have been wanting to write my own comic for a while now. For a few years, I made do with amusing doodles on whiteboards, and rediculous sketches on scrap paper to entertain my friends. But people kept prodding me. "You should start a comic!", everyone said. So finally the peer pressure plus my own secret dreams became enough to push me, and I started Furtive and Grubby, which I occasionally update.
Apparently, that wasn't enough. I keep getting wild ideas, which I keep trying to avoid, promising myself that I'm not good enough at drawing to actually make a webcomic that has a real plot, and recurring characters, and things. But I failed to avoid my latest one, and I find myself drawing a real, actual comic, with a story and main characters, and all those things I thought only someone else could do. The first thing I've learned is that its pretty fun to have characters with a back story, and personality, who can interact with each other!
...the second thing I learned is that I really have no idea what I'm doing. My layouts are pretty stiff, my inking needs work, and I struggle to not draw all my characters in the same poses from the same distance away in every frame. And worse - I don't even KNOW what other mistakes I'm making! I don't know the first thing about writing a comic! Just like I told myself! CRAP!
So, I come to you guys. What sorts of things should I keep in mind? What makes a good comic a good comic, in your eyes? What things are awful and should be avoided at all costs? When you started out, how did you learn what to do and what not to do?
If you are feeling particularly benevolent, you could look at the first three pages I have done so far and critique me harshly - because I really want to learn. These characters are rattling around in my brain and want to get out, and I want to do them justice.

4:30a Off to the blue holes
http://www.smallhope.com/ We'll probably be offline for a week, and aside from the day of travel each way, will be turning off the cells. (If we did have coverage on Andros, it would definitely be roaming.) If there's an emergency, small hope does have an 800 number.
